Diet

What is a diet?

A special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons. There are a number of diets which have been developed and all have shown some success in reducing weight but the simple equation remains the number of calories consumed needs to be less than the number of calories burned.

Who needs to go on a diet?

Britain needs to go on a diet, says top health officials in the UK. Children and adults routinely eat too many calories, and it’s why so many are overweight or obese.

How many calories should we eat?

It is recommended that women should eat no more than 2,000 calories a day, while men should limit their intake to 2,500.

For children, it varies depending on age. A four-year-old should consume no more than 1,300, while for males aged 17 and 18 it is about 3,000, but overweight and obese children are consuming up to 500 calories more than that.

How to select the right diet?

The right diet is one which works for the individual and they are able to comply with and makes them feel better and lose weight. Diet alone though will not provide the long-term benefits to your health it is important to have the right mindset and exercise regime in place to get sustainable health benefits. Putting in place good lifelong diet habits to manage your weight must be the ultimate goal of your diet.

Exercise

How does activity improve health?
  • People who do regular physical activity have a 35% lower risk of heart disease and stroke and a 50% lower risk of diabetes and of bowel cancer.
  • Best of all, exercise feels good. It boosts feel-good chemicals that raise self-esteem and helps with sleep and concentration.
  • Regular exercisers have a 30% lower risk of depression and of dementia.
How much exercise should I do?

According to the Department of Heath all adults should:

  • Be active daily
  • At least do 2 and a half hours of moderate intensity exercise over a week. That is just half an hour for five days a week
What do they mean by moderate intensity?

Moderate intensity means getting out of breath and your heart rate increasing. A good practical measure is when you can’t speak in complete sentences like you would if you’re sitting down yet you can still get your point across. Examples include:

  • Cycling
  • Brisk walking
What do you mean by vigorous intensity?

This is a step above moderate and can be very good for your health. You’ll be breathing a lot harder, get a lot warmer and be able to speak only in three or four word sentences only. Examples of this include:

  • Sports such as swimming or football
  • Running
Is walking good for you?

In Harvard Men’s Health Watch (HMHW), two scientists sifted through 4,295 articles published on walking. They found that walking reduced the risk of heart problems by 31% and cut the risk of dying during the study period (on average about 11 years) by 32%.The greatest benefits went to people who walked longer distances, walked at a faster pace, or both

What if I haven’t got time to exercise?

Build exercise into your everyday life and make small changes over time. Some of the changes you could consider include:

  • Use the stairs
  • Exercise in your lunch-break
  • Exercise at home or in the park – you don’t need to go to a gym
  • Play more with your kids
  • Get into housework and gardening
  • Combine exercise with your social life by joining a gym, club or team. Increasingly, there are sports opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. But make sure you’re fit enough to avoid injury.

Mindset

What is Mindset?

Is a way of thinking.

Your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits. Your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel and what you do. Your mindset impacts how you make sense of the world and how you make sense of you.

Because they are related to mindset, it also helps to understand attitude and beliefs and this is likely to have a major impact on achieving your weight loss goals.

What is a Fixed Mindset?

In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort

What is a Growth Mindset?

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.

Can you change your Mindset?

Yes you can change your mindset but it is important that you take on a growth mindset where you look to make changes to your beliefs.

“Open the window of your mind. Allow the fresh air, new lights and new truths to enter.”
